FAQ
The Dext Bookkeeping Automation Platform
Is the Dext Bookkeeping Automation Platform a brand new product?

The Dext Bookkeeping Automation Platform builds on the foundations of Dext Prepare, integrating key features from Dext Precision and Dext Commerce to create a seamless, more powerful experience.

What is happening to Dext Prepare?

All Dext Prepare features are now available in the Dext Bookkeeping Automation Platform. The platform has an enhanced, simplified, and more intuitive design, with clearer navigation and new roles and permissions across both the web and mobile applications.

What is happening to Dext Precision?

The features from Dext Precision are now available in the new platform. Existing Dext Precision customers will have all of the current Dext Precision features available to them in the new platform. Customers who do not currently have Dext Precision will have the option to upgrade and access these features from within the Dext Platform.

What happens if I only use Precision?

You'll continue to have full access to all the features of Dext Precision in its current version. Later this year, we’ll be introducing an enhanced experience within the new Dext platform, and we’ll keep you informed every step of the way to ensure a smooth transition.

What is happening to Dext Commerce?

Existing customers will continue to access the Dext Commerce platform separately from the new Dext Bookkeeping Automation platform. We will communicate directly with existing customers about plans to migrate full Dext Commerce into the Dext platform..

What is Commerce Lite, and how is it different from Dext Commerce?

Commerce Lite is our simple eCommerce solution designed for small businesses with 250 or fewer transactions per month. It does not include advanced functionality such as SKU matching, support for sellers using more than five eCommerce platforms or marketplaces, or in-depth SKU-level analysis. Additionally, it does not support businesses selling mixed-rate goods that require advanced tax calculations, Amazon sellers, or those needing advanced integrations with third-party platforms.
Commerce Lite is now available in the new Dext platform. We encourage businesses currently using Dext Commerce to remain on that platform, as Commerce Lite is designed for smaller-scale needs.

What happens if I only use Commerce?

We will communicate directly with existing Dext Commerce customers about plans to migrate Dext Commerce functionality into the new Dext platform.

My team (Practices)
What changes will my team see when they switch to the new Dext experience?

When your team switches to the new Dext experience, you'll notice a fresh, modern design with a more intuitive layout and navigation, making it even easier to use. Here’s what’s different:

  • A single login now gives you access to a wider set of features.

  • The new navigation clearly separates practice-level tasks from client work.

  • There are distinct roles and permissions for your team (practice users) and your clients (business users).

  • Settings are now clearer and simpler, whether at the user, practice, or client/business level.

  • You’ll get a more tailored experience, with features designed specifically for different types of businesses and users.

  • You’ll have greater flexibility to manage access to different features for different client types

  • If your practice also uses Dext for its own internal bookkeeping, your practice will now be contained in its own space with separate access and permissions. This ensures staff have different access for managing their own expenses versus handling client work. Non-client-facing staff can also use it without seeing the client list.
Will the changeover for my team happen automatically?

No, the switch doesn’t happen automatically. If your team hasn’t switched yet, they can do so at any time. Each team member will see an in-product notification inviting them to move to the new experience, and they’ll have the option to switch back to the old version if needed.

If you're an owner or admin user, you can also switch your entire team over at once to ensure a consistent experience across your practice.

What benefits will my team see when they switch?

The Dext platform now brings together the features of Prepare and Precision, making it easier to access and get more value from a wider range of tools, all in one place. The next phase of this evolution is Commerce, which will launch later this year.
With enhanced capabilities for expense claims, approvals, and more, managing roles, permissions, and practice-wide settings is now much more seamless.
If you switch, you now have access to:
Data Health & Insights (paid add-on) – including data health checks, cleanup tools, and business insights, all within a single platform.
Workflows (for Practice Advanced users - paid subscription) – helping you streamline recurring tasks like VAT returns, client onboarding, and other scheduled workflows.
Commerce Lite – allowing online-selling clients to connect Shopify, Squarespace, or Wix so sales and costs flow directly into their Sales and Cost Inbox.
If you don’t switch, you won’t have access to Data Health & Insights, Commerce Lite, or Workflows.

Does my team need to change the way we work?

If you switch, there are minimal changes to existing functionality, so you can continue using Dext for all your core work as you have done previously. However, you’ll notice improvements to the interface, navigation, client list, and settings management areas. We will continue rolling out new features over the coming months to further enhance the capabilities within the Dext platform.

What Settings Change When I Switch?

The layout of Settings has been updated to make navigation easier, but the functionality remains the same. Your existing settings setup will not change. However, you may need to adjust roles & permissions for your team and client users.

What Changes Will My Clients See When They Switch?

Dext now has a fresh, modern, and intuitive look with an improved layout and navigation to make it even easier to use.
Key Changes for Your Clients:

  • All-in-One Access – Clients can now access all features in one place with a single login.

  • Improved Mobile Experience – The mobile app now features a new navigation, making it easier for clients to access a broader range of features on the go.
Will the changeover for clients happen automatically?

No, the changeover for clients will not happen automatically.

A button is available in your client list, allowing you to switch all of your clients at once or stagger the rollout at your own pace.

Once you enable the new version for a client, each team member in their business has the option to switch over if they choose to—they are not automatically switched.

You can manage the transition by either:

  • Switching all of your clients over at once
  • Rolling out the switch in stages

The key difference is that clients now have control—they can choose to switch over to the new version of Dext when they’re ready.

In the first phase of the enhanced experience, clients could only switch over with their accountant or bookkeeper. Now, clients have the ability to make the switch themselves, giving them more flexibility and independence.

Who will notify my clients? Do I need to notify them?

From July 2024, all users were informed through in-product notifications, letting them know that a new version of Dext is now available. To support you, we’ve also provided an email template that you can use to notify your clients and help answer any questions. While we’ll continue to communicate these changes, you may also want to reach out to ensure your clients feel informed and supported throughout the transition.

Will my clients need training? Will they need to change the way they work?

The new version of Dext is designed to be even more simple and intuitive, making it easier for your clients to get more value from Dext while also helping you receive accurate, timely information. For clients who are new to Dext, there will be additional in-product guidance to help them get started.

To support the switch, we will be running training webinars throughout March 2025, which your clients can sign up for. These sessions will help them understand the new version of Dext, ensuring a smooth transition and allowing them to take full advantage of the enhanced experience.
